The Urban Alcove
Spring 2025 - Tricia Stuth
Sarah Dunn and I designed a six-story cohousing multifamily structure that bridges the gap between the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the Central Business District, fostering a sense of community through shared spaces. The design incorporates the concept of a single stair, featuring communal areas and dwelling units that foster interaction between young professionals and young families. By offering a range of dwelling types, from studios to three-bedroom units, the building promotes flexibility and diversity, accommodating various lifestyles.
With a total square footage of 21,185 square feet, the dwelling sizes vary to support different living needs. One-bedroom units range from 500 to 600 square feet, two-bedroom units from 700 to 850 square feet, and three-bedroom units are approximately 1,100 square feet. Shared spaces such as a laundry room, co-dining kitchen, and coworking areas are integrated to bring residents together, promoting a sense of community and collaboration.
The design prioritizes walkability and outdoor space, encouraging residents to connect with their surroundings. This approach creates a dynamic, diverse, and accessible living environment that nurtures interaction and fosters a cohesive community.
